The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) of the Department of Defense (DoD) announced today that on December 1, 2004, Jamie Michael Chick, age 22, a former private in the U.S. Army, assigned to the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD, was sentenced in the U.S. District Court, Baltimore, MD, by Judge Frederick Motz, to 57 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
Chick’s sentence follows an October 8, 2004 guilty plea to federal charges of interstate transportation and shipment of child pornography by computer. An investigation determined that Chick, using the screen name, “jdivel” entered a channel (chat room) entitled “#0!!!!!!!!!!!!!Preteen00” and advertised that he had “pre pics” which meant he had prepubescent pictures.
A subsequent search warrant at Chick’s residence disclosed that Chick’s home computer contained over 2000 graphic image files of child pornography. Some of the image files reviewed contained known, identified child victims.
Chick later admitted to interviewing agents that he used both his Government and home computers to access websites to look at young girls.
The investigation was conducted by the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (the criminal investigative arm of the OIG DoD) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution was handled by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew Norman, U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland
