Officials responded to a call Thursday about the strong odor of gasoline at the Morganton Place Apartments in Fayetteville and found a smoldering fire that had burned two bedrooms. It was speculated that Holly Wimunc was murdered in her apartment and the fire was set to destroy evidence.
"At the end of this journey of sadness, we wish to thank the many, many people who have assisted us so quickly and competently in the search," James said. "We are grateful to those people ... around the country for their prayers for her safe return. Those prayers and support will help us to make it through this impossibly tough time."
Holley Wimunc was going through a divorce from her husband. Fayetteville police and State Bureau of Investigation agents spoke with him last week during their investigation.
Around 3pm on July 14th, police made official charges in Holly's death. John Wimunch and Kyle Alden (see booking photos above) were initially charged with the arson of Wimunc's apartment but after police interviews, John Wimunc was charged with first degree murder. Alden was charged with felony accessory after the fact to first degree murder. They were taken to Cumberland County's jail and held without bond.
The story was featured on the America's Most Wanted website. That website offered the following information;
"When Second Lieutenant Holly Wimunc didn’t report for work in the baby ward at the Womack Army Medical Center on July 10th, 2008, her co-workers went to her residence nearby to check on her. That’s when police say they noticed the smoke and called 9-1-1.
Cops say that when firefighters arrived on the scene, the fire had extinguished itself and was in a smoldering state. The Fire Marshals worked from the least amount of damage to the most amount of damage to determine a cause, and found that an accelerant was used to ignite the blaze.
Wimunc was nowhere to be found, and her car was still left in the parking lot of her complex.
Second Lieutenant Holly Wimunc graduated from St. Ambrose University in Iowa with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. Ft. Bragg is Wimunc’s first duty assignment, and she’s been there since August 2007."
Wimunc is one of dozens of women murdered at Fort Bragg or by Fort Bragg soldiers. All the cases are here
